Seasonally, I tend to change up my skin care. This winter I have really noticed a lot of dryness in my skin. My skin usually falls on the normal to oily spectrum, but that has changed this winter. I am experiencing more normal to dry skin with a lot of tightness on my forehead. As a result, I have switched up my entire skin care routine and added in lots of new products to boost my skin’s hydration. Here is the regular routine I follow daily or weekly depending on the step.
Step 1: Makeup Removal
Removing your makeup is one of the most important steps in your skin care routine. Everything you put on your skin is absorbed through your pores. Without properly removing your makeup it is going to continue to congest your pores and cause long term damage such as premature signs of aging. I don’t know about you, but I am willing to do just about anything to prevent aging. So, let’s start with something easy like removing your makeup.
When removing my makeup, I do so in two steps. First, I use a micellar water followed by a milk cleanser. I wear a lot of makeup on a daily basis as well as sun protection, so I want to make sure I break down and remove all of those products. The micellar water does a good job at breaking down my mascara and heavy makeup, but doesn’t get rid of everything. This is why I follow up with a milk cleanser. It eliminates having to really rub my skin and picks up anything left behind by my micellar water. I also find a milk cleanser feels really soothing and is a nice little cooling massage for my skin.
I prefer a micellar water and milk cleanser because they don’t strip the skin of the natural oil. It leaves my skin feeling hydrated and comfortable – especially this time of year when I am more on the dry side.
Currently, I am using: Bioderma’s Sensibio H2o Micellar Water and Avene’s 3-in-1 Makeup Remover. Both are great for sensitive skin and come in large value size formats, which I appreciate.
Step 2: Cleansing Skin
Once my makeup is removed, it is time to cleanse my skin. I always remove my makeup and clean my skin in two separate steps. You won’t see the same benefits doing it all as one step. Your cleansing products can’t work through the makeup and reach your skin to deep clean your pores.
During the evening, I always do this step with my Clarisonic Mia 1. I have had my Clarisonic for probably five years now and it is something I cannot live without. I have the basic one speed version. Since I have started using my Clarisonic, I have noticed an improvement in my skin’s texture and clarity. During this time of year it also helps to buff off any dry skin patches too. I switch back and forth between the Radiance Brush Head and the Sensitive Skin Brush Head. I find both and very gentle and not too abrasive on my skin.
When choosing a cleanser, I always opt for a super gentle gel cleanser that doesn’t foam. I find that foaming gel cleansers can be too stripping. I usually opt for Jouviance’s Cleansing Gel. It is paraben, alcohol, fragrance and soap free. It has a rich texture and leaves my skin feeling clean and refreshed.
Step 3: Exfoliating
I used to think using my Clarisonic daily was enough exfoliation for my skin, but I was very wrong. Adding both a physical and chemical exfoliator into my routine has made such a big difference. I have noticed the number and size of the blackheads on my skin has decreased and my pores look much tighter and less congested.
Every night I use Pixi’s Glow Tonic exfoliating toner. It has 5% glycolic acid, which works as a chemical exfoliator. When I first started using this it made my skin break out, but once I was over the break outs I noticed the biggest change in my pores. My skin looks brighter, healthier and refreshed. This product is magic.
A couple times a week I use Vasanti’s Brighten Up! Enzymatic Exfoliator. It has super gentle micro-crystals and papaya enzyme that work together to exfoliate the skin. I feel like this product is so underrated. It is so gentle, yet effective. I think everyone needs to use this exfoliator.
Step 4: Mask
A few times a week I treat my skin to a mask. I love face masks. They are a great way to give your skin a little extra of what it needs. The mask I use changes depending on how my skin is feeling that day. Some of my current favourite masks are Dermalogica’s Charcoal Rescue Mask, Neostrata’s Hydrating and Plumping Sheet Mask and Origin’s Retexturizing Mask with Rose Clay.
Step 5: Facial Oil
Adding a facial oil into my routine was new this winter. During an extreme cold spell my skin was extremely dehydrated and uncomfortable. I was willing to put anything on my face to make it feel better. While watching some instagram stories, I stumbled upon a blogger’s nighttime routine where she applied a facial oil. Since then, I have integrated Korres Wild Rose Vitamin C Active Brightening Oil into my routine. I have also been testing out the new Lise Watier Sublimessence Nuit. Stay tuned for a full review.
Oils are amazing because they help to maintain and strengthen the moisture barrier on our skin. Oils also penetrate deeper into the skin because of their small molecular structure – aka instead of sitting on the surface of your skin the oil is absorbed deeper providing better long term benefits.
Step 6: Serums/Treatments
The serums and treatments I use regularly change based on the needs of my skin. I think it is such an important part of my routine because my skin changes depending on the weather, the time of the month, my diet etc. By regularly changing which products I am using I can give my skin exactly what it needs. Serums I am currently loving are the Clarins Double Serum, Vichy Idealia (my go to serum) and Korres Rose Brightening Face and Eye Serum. My favourite treatment is Vichy’s Mineral 89. If you haven’t tried this you NEED to. It helps stregthen, protect and hydrate your skin – amazing!!
It is important to incorporate a serum into your routine because they are your targeted treatment. They are highly concentrated in active ingredients (usually why they come with a higher price tag) and can target very specific concerns. Like facial oils, they also have a smaller molecular make up meaning they work their magic below the surface of the skin.
Step 7: Moisturize
We are at the end of what may seem like my never ending routine. The last step of my routine is to apply a moisturizer. This is another product I switch up based on what my skin is feeling. I use a moisturizer on my face and a separate eye cream. Some of my favourite face night creams are Vichy Idealia Skin Sleep, Korres Rose Sleeping Facial and La Roche Posay Hydraphase. For the eyes I have been loving the Vichy Aqualia Eye Balm and Neostrata Fruit Stem Cell Anti-Wrinkle Eye Cream.
I usually try to use a moisturizer that is made to be used in the evening. When we sleep our skin goes through a restorative process to repair and heal itself. Products that are made to be used at night work with our skin during its repairing and restoring state. I also opt for something a little bit richer just because I prefer a heavier texture at night and something lighter in the day.
