Skin Benefits of Thermal Water

Vichy Thermal Water, La Roche Posay Thermal Water, Avene Thermal WaterI already know what you’re thinking, “It’s water in a can… why would I buy water in a can?”.  Trust me, I felt the same way as you. After doing some research and adding it to my skincare routine, I’m hooked. Not only does it have a million different uses, it also has so many benefits for your skin.

Let’s dive right into it, what is thermal water? It is rain water that is harvested from springs in France. The water takes years to get to the source where it is harvested. During this journey, it collects minerals and anti-oxidants from the earth that have incredible benefits for the skin.

Thermal water is amazing at soothing any kind of redness associated with inflammation. It can also soothe irritation and has the ability to balance the pH level on the skin (aka it can work as a toner). It can be used as a makeup setting spray, add hydration to the skin and cool the skin.

I love using thermal water through out the day. Working indoors, and over the winter, I found my skin could feel very dry throughout the day. A little spritz of thermal water helps my skin feel refreshed and reduce any feeling of dehydration. Also, during the summer it feels so refreshing on a hot day. In addition to use throughout the day, I also use it as part of my morning and nighttime skincare routine. I apply it after cleansing and before moisturizing. Applying moisturizer over top helps to lock the hydration, anti-oxidants and minerals into the skin.

Monthly Must Haves: March 2016

Monthly Must Haves: March 2016

I have been testing out a lot of new products throughout the month of March and rediscovering some old products in my stash. Here are some of my favourite discoveries this month:

Nyx Highlight and Contour Pro Palette – This product has been something I have reached for everyday, whether I am going for a subtle everyday look or a full on glam look I find I reach for this. It is also super affordable with amazing quality. For more details check out my full review here.

Vichy Normaderm Tri-Activ Mask – This product has been SAVING my skin this month. My skin has been very active this month with break outs appearing like crazy. I rediscovered this product in my stash to help target these pesky breakouts. I apply it at night at night, before I go to bed, and when I wake up in the morning the breakouts have really calmed down. So happy I rediscovered this mask!

Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Caramello – I think the whole entire world knows that my favourite liquid lipsticks come from Stila. This month I think the only thing I have worn is this shade in Caramello and I have gotten so many compliments. It is the perfect nude that can pull any look together. If I want to change it up I just apply a gloss over top and it gives it a completely new look. Everyone needs to try Stila’s Liquid Lipsticks.

Real Techniques Stippling Brush – I purchased a new foundation brush at the beginning of March and I am in love. I feel like I am a little late jumping on the whole stippling brush band wagon… like years late. I love this brush because it gives me a lot of coverage without looking too heavy or cakey. It blends my foundation like a dream, while giving me the coverage I desire.

Smashbox Photo Matte Anti-Shine Primer – I have never really been a fan of Smashbox primers, until now. I tried their famous original primer a while back and was very unimpressed, it left my skin an oily mess. This month I ran out of my tried and true everyday primer and had the Smashbox Photo Matte Anti-Shine Primer in my stash and decided to give it a try. I am happy I did because I actually have been really enjoying it. It creates a perfect matte base and helps my makeup stay all day. The one downfall is that I don’t find it is very good at covering pores, but I was still very happy with the performance.

That’s it for my favourites! Did you have any products you loved this month?

Happy April,

Nivea After Shave as Makeup Primer?

Nivea for Men After Shave Balm as Makeup PrimerMy willingness to slap just about anything on my face might be getting out of hand. I tried to explain to my mom that I was testing out aftershave as makeup primer and she and when she asked why my response was, “because it was on the internet”. Now that I am taking a minute to think about this, “because it was on the internet” is not always a valid excuse, but I’m always willing to take one for the team here on the blog. You’re welcome!

This internet trend of using Nivea for Men After Shave Balm as a makeup primer all started with Nikkie from NikkieTutorials, but most recently I heard about it from my best friend who is also a makeup artist. She sent me a snapchat of herself when she was using it after a long day and her makeup still looked FLAWLESS. Obviously, I had to give it a try.

I used the product over the course of three days. I applied it to my skin after cleansing, toning and moisturizing. The consistency is much different than what I am used to in a primer. It is very runny and liquid in consistency. I applied a quarter sized amount of product to my finger tips, rubbed my hands together and then applied it all over the face focusing mostly on my t-zone as that is where I get oily.

Nivea for Men After Shave Balm

Once applied, as the product started to dry, it left my skin feeling kind of sticky or tacky. At first, this left me feeling kind of concerned because this was something I had never experienced with a primer. However it worked great! This stuff should be renamed to makeup glue because my makeup lasted all day with it. I had a little bit of patchiness start around my nose by the end of the day, but that is normal for me as I tend to rub or touch my nose a lot throughout the day. The product also controlled oil on my t-zone and kept my skin to a demi-matte finish. Over the course of the three days I had the same results where my makeup lasted and looked great. I tested different applications, with both a sponge and a brush, and I still had the same results.

There is a fragrance to this product. It is a kind of masculine scent, but it is very fresh and not like an overwhelming cologne smell. It does linger on the skin for a little while after application, but then disappears. Personally, I didn’t mind the smell at all and it kind of reminds me of those masculine scented candles from Bath and Body Works. If you are someone with sensitivity to fragrance, I would proceed with caution.

Although the product made my makeup look amazing, my skin isn’t quite as happy. On day three, after application, I started to notice some break outs occurring on my face. When I washed off my makeup that night I had developed five blemishes on my face, which weren’t there in the morning. This is a huge disappointment because I love the way my makeup looks on top of it. I don’t plan on parting with it yet because I really did love how it worked. Instead, I think I’ll keep it in my vanity for those times when I run out of primer, or for every once and a while when I need my foundation to really last.

Have you tried the Nivea for Men After Shave Balm as primer? Are there any other interesting makeup trends out there I should try?

Happy Priming,

Kaitlyn xo
