Product Review: Lipsense by SeneGence

SeneGence Lipsense Review Plum

I love lipstick. There is something about lipstick that finishes off a look and makes you look put together – even when you might not be. As much as I love lipstick, I am not a huge fan of wearing products that require a lot of maintenance. I hate having to worry about if my lipstick is wearing off, or smeared all over my face.

I have started to wear lipstick more frequently due to the new liquid lip products that are long wearing and low maintenance. Recently Emily, a SeneGence Consultant, reached out to me offering a Lipsense product of choice for me to try. This was the first time I had ever heard of SeneGence and their Lipsense products. Lipsense makes lip kits that are unlike your traditional lipstick, stain or colour. They are waterproof, kiss-proof, budge-proof, smudge-proof and are long-wearing (anywhere from 4-18 hours).

What is Lipsense?

Thanks to the whole Kylie Lip Kit trend, we have all become very familiar with the variety of long wearing lip kits available on the market. Lipsense offers a lip kit that includes a lip colour (your base), a top coat in a number of finishes and an easy to use lip colour remover product. Lipsense offers 70 different shades of lip colours and a variety of finishes in their top coats – pearl, shimmer, matte or glossy.

You can also purchase the products separately (outside of purchasing a kit), but for first time users I definitely recommend purchasing a kit. I found it extremely helpful to have all the necessary steps to start. My kit included the glossy top coat, the Ooops! Remover and a base lip colour in the shade Plum.

Application Tips and Tricks

When I first got my Lipsense I was like a kid at Christmas. I tore through the package and began swatching, playing and applying the product. Through all this excitement, like any kid at Christmas, I neglected to read the instructions or the lovely information book Emily shared with me. This was a huge mistake because there is a very specific process you have to follow when applying your Lipsense. Following the process, which is not difficult, ensures that you get the best possible application of the product and that it will be long-wearing.

How to Apply Your Lipsense

  1. Apply the product to clean dry lips. This will ensure the longevity of the product.
  2. Shake the tube horizontally for a few seconds prior to application.
  3. Lipsense is applied using a layering technique. The number of layers you add will enhance the pigmentation of the product. For best results, it is recommended to apply 2-3 layers. When applying the layers you want to do it in one quick sweep across the lips from one side to the other. You do not want go back and forth. Then, wait a few seconds for the product to dry before applying the second layer. Be sure to keep your lips separated while the product is drying between layers.
  4. Add your top coat!

For a visual demonstration, check out SeneGence’s application video here.

Some great tips are that the Ooops! Remover can also be used as a corrector. You can use it to clean up any mistakes, or smooth along the edges of your lip line. Also, since you layer the products to get the desired colour pay off you want Lipsense is very customizable. You can layer different shades together to get any colour of your choice. I think this is amazing because sometimes it is hard to find that perfect shade for your skin tone and the ability to layer different colours together makes the possibilities endless.

My Experience

I am extremely impressed with Lipsense. At first, I was a little overwhelmed with the application process, but once I tried it I was hooked. The applicator is small enough that it allows you to be precise in your application and get a smooth clean line along the edges, but still large enough to be able to cover your lips in one quick sweep. I also did go back over spots I needed (even though you aren’t supposed to) and I didn’t have any issues.

I also found the product extremely comfortable to wear – thanks to the top coat. Applying the top coat added an extra boost of moisture to my lips leaving them so comfortable. Even after the top coat wore off it left a demi-matte finish on my lips. The finish was absolutely beautiful. It is important to make sure you really apply the top coat to your entire lips. If you don’t I do find the lip colour itself can feel a bit sticky, but the top coat  makes that completely disappear.

The first time I wore the colour I was out for a day of shopping with a friend. I was so surprised when the colour didn’t wear off on the lid of my coffee cup. It felt like I wasn’t even wearing anything on my lips and I kept having to ask my friend if my lip colour was still there. Eventually there was some wear towards the inside of my lips, but not until after I wore the product for approximately 8 hours and had eaten, drank and chatted a lot.

Here are some time lapse photos Emily has provided of the wear time for her Lipsense products:

Monthly Must Haves: November 2016

Vasanti Eye Shadow Duo, La Roche Posay Mascara, Rodan + Fields Toner, Color Switch

Monthly Must Haves are one of my favourite posts to write. Nearing the end of every month my roommate and I think about all the new products I’ve tried, or the things I have been using a lot lately, and pick out my favourites. She is usually better at remembering which products I have been using the most then I am. The other thing I love about monthly favourites is that it gives me a little bit of time to reflect on the actual month itself. The month of November was a crazy busy month for me. Despite the busy time, I still managed to give lots of new products a try! Let’s get into some of my favourites!

Vasanti Eye Shadow Duo Taj Mahal

Vasanti Taj Mahal Silky Eye Shadow Duo ($22) – This duo has a metallic champagne rose colour paired with a luminous cream shade and they are absolutely stunning. I love wearing the champagne rose colour all over my lid and applying the cream shade to my inner corner and brow bone as a highlight. I usually add some depth to the crease by using my bronzer. The shadows are incredibly pigmented and super smooth. They have beautiful colour pay off as well. I also love how small and compact the duos are. It is the perfect size for someone who travels, or is on the go a lot.

La Roche Posay Respectissime Volume Mascara

La Roche Posay Respectissime Volume Mascara ($20) – I rarely test out new mascaras. I have my tried and true go-to products that I stick to for mascara. This month, I was having some issues with my eyes feeling irritated and I was trying to determine if it was related to my eye makeup. While testing out this theory, I swapped out my regular mascara for this one from La Roche Posay. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. This mascara is designed to provide zero discomfort from application to when you remove it at the end of the day. It is paraben free and made for those with sensitive eyes, as well as safe for contact lens wearers. The product itself is enriched with ceramides, which will help strenghthen the lashes. I love when cosmetic products provide extra benefits, like stregthening my lashes. This product is really good at creating a lot of volume. The large brush catches each individual lash and helps to separate and provide fullness to the lashes.

Rodan + Fields Redefine Pore Minimizing Toner

Rodan + Fields Redefine Pore Minimizing Toner ($55) – This month, I did a thirty day challenge using Rodan + Fields products from their Redefine product line thanks to one of their consultants Devon – check out her page here. During the challenge I fell in love with the toner that is part of their Redefine line. My number one skin concern is pores. I am constantly up close in a magnifying mirror examining the appearance of my pores, or trying new products to improve or conceal my pore size. When I received my Rodan + Fields package, I was so excited to discover the toner that is specifically designed to minimize the appearance of pores. This toner is alcohol free. That alone is a huge win in my books. I often times, avoid toners because I don’t like the heavy smell of alcohol that is present. I have to say, this one smells fantastic! This product uses hydroxy acids to exfoliate dead skin cells and unclog pores. This can enhance the benefits of the product you use afterwards because the exfoliating and pore clearing actions will allow the products you apply after to better penetrate the skin. I did notice while using this product that my moisturizers absorbed more quickly into the skin and the exfoliation from this product left my skin looking brighter.

Clean Sweep Makeup Brush Pad

Clean Sweep Makeup Brush Pad ($8) – This product is a life changer, I am not even being the slightest bit over dramatic. This is a dry brush cleaning tool you can use as a quick cleanse between colours. I use this specifically for my eye shadow brushes. You just swirl the brush on the textured pad and it removes all colour from the brush. It allows you to use the same brush for different colours without having to worry about ruining a shadow because there was still pigment on your brush from the previous shadow. I found mine for around $8 at Winners. Here is a link to a comparable product at Sephora, but I would recommend looking at other retailers for cheaper alternatives.

Those are a few of my favourites from the month of November. Did you have any new favourites this month? Please share them with me in a comment below!

Happy December,

Micellar Water Comparison (Bioderma, Vichy, Garnier, Marcelle and Simple)

Garnier Micellar Water, Vichy Micellar Water, Simple Skincare Micellar Water, Marcelle Micellar WaterMicellar water has been a huge part of my skincare routine for the past two years. With so many new options available at the drugstore, I decided to put some other alternatives to the test to see how they rank in comparison to my tried and true Bioderma. Let the battle of the micellar waters begin!

Vichy Purete One Step Cleansing Micellar Solution 3 in 1

The Vichy One Step Cleansing Micellar Solution claims to be a cleanser, toner and eye makeup remover. It is ultra-gentle, refreshing, purifies skin, removes makeup and soothes irritation. It attracts impurities like a magnet eliminating any need to rub or tug at the skin to remove makeup. It is ideal for all skin types and all skin concerns. Vichy states that they have a unique micellar technology which can effectively remove impurities.

Formula: The Vichy Micellar Solution has a very fresh clean scent – it is an added fragrance to the product. The list of ingredients in this micellar and the Garnier version (up next, keep reading!) are almost identical. Vichy’s micellar is tested on sensitive skin under dermatological control, hypoallergenic, paraben free and includes the Vichy Thermal Spa Water making it both soothing and fortifying.

Packaging: The packaging on this water is very similar to most on the market. It has a flip open cap with a small hole that dispenses the product when turned upside down. The one thing I did like about this bottle in particular is that it is more rectangular in shape and I felt like it was easier to pack when I have needed to take makeup somewhere and it fit better in  my makeup bag because of the shape.

Performance: This product worked extremely quickly and is the most comparable to my dear Bioderma. I could remove my entire face of makeup in about one and a half cotton pads – super impressive. The product was very soothing on the skin and left my face refreshed and clean without feeling stripped or dry. It was not irritating to the eyes or lips. I will mention that I did have a skin irritation as a result of testing out some new products recently. Normally, I would have avoided placing the micellar water on this area, but since it said it had soothing properties I decided to give it a try. It wasn’t my smartest idea and it ended up making that irritation feel worse. Overall, I did really enjoy this micellar water, it was gentle, and it did live up to it’s claims. However, I would avoid any contact with skin irritations in the future.

Garnier SkinActive Micellar Water All-In-1 Cleansing Water

The Garnier SkinActive Micellar Water claims to remove makeup, cleanse and refresh. It is a non-rinse formula safe for the face, eyes and lips. It is oil free, alcohol free and fragrance free. It is tested under Dermatological and Ophthalmological control and is non-greasy and non-comedogenic.

Formula: The formula, as previously mentioned is almost identical to Vichy’s, but there are two main differences. One, there is no fragrance to this product. And two, there is BHT in this formula (also known as butylated hydroxytoluene). It is used to help extend product shelf life and maintain product quality. You’re probably wondering why I am bringing up this long word and the reason being is some people boycott products over this ingredient due to potential side effects. I have looked into it and it is an ingredient that is regulated by Health Canada and they only allow a concentration of 0.1% or less. It is continuously being reviewed and monitored by Health Canada and they have confirmed that the amount currently found in cosmetic products is safe. You can find more details here. Based on my own research I will definitely be more aware of BHT, but I don’t plan on avoiding products with BHT in the future and it won’t stop me from reusing or repurchasing this product.

Packaging: Garnier Micellar Water has very standard packaging. It is similar to most micellar waters on the market. It has a flip cap with a small hole underneath that dispenses the product when it is flipped upside down.

Performance: The performance on this product is basically identical to Vichy’s, which isn’t surprising considering their ingredients are very similar. It took very little product to remove a full face of makeup (about one and a half cotton pads). It left no residue on the skin, no tight feeling and my skin felt clean. The only thing I didn’t find with this one that I was missing is that I didn’t feel a cooling refreshing feeling on the skin afterwards. This was a little disappointing as that is something I really enjoy in a micellar. Other than that, the performance was extremely good and very comparable to Bioderma.

Marcelle 3-in-1 Micellar Solution

The Marcelle 3-in-1 Micellar Solution claims to gently cleanse and effectively remove makeup from both the face and eyes, while soothing the skin. It is supposed to work on even the most dry, sensitive and intolerant skin. Effective on even waterproof makeup.

Formula: It has a very fresh cucumber scent, which comes from the cucumber extract included within the list of ingredients – there is no added fragrance to this product. Something I found interesting about the list of ingredients on this micellar water is that it has salicylic acid in it. This is a nice addition to the product as salicylic acid is great for improving skin texture. It is also 100% hypoallergenic, 100% perfume free, gluten free, paraben free, alcohol free, oil free, soap free, non comedogenic, recognized by the Canadian Dermatology Association and Ophthalmologist tested.

Packaging: I loooove the packaging on this product and I think every other brand should adopt this packaging. It has a pump on the top that you place your cotton over top of and then press down. As you press down, the product is dispensed and immediately absorbed into your cotton. This provides a lot better control when it comes to how much product you use because you know the exact number of pumps you need to soak your cotton and get the job done. Plus, if you’re clumsy like me, you don’t have to worry about knocking it over and spilling it everywhere as the pump makes it spill proof!

Marcelle occasionally releases bonus format sizes where you can get extra product for the same cost, or a small gift will be attached as a gift with purchase. Marcelle is great at providing really good bonus offers with their products.

Performance: It left my skin feeling clean without any residue on the skin. It provided a very cooling sensation on the skin and did not leave my skin feeling tight or stripped. It took two cotton pads to remove my full face of makeup – one for each half of my face. It did a good job at removing my makeup, however it was much faster at taking off my face makeup (foundation) versus my eye makeup (mascara). Overall, I am very happy with the performance.

Simple Skincare Cleansing Micellar Water

Simple claims that their micellar is the perfect blend of multi-vitamins. It has skin loving ingredients that will gently cleanse with removing makeup leaving the skin feeling clean and hydrated.

Formula: The Simple Micellar Water has a very light chamomile scent to it. There are no harsh chemicals to upset the skin, no artificial fragrance and no parabens. It is Dermatologist tested and non-comedogenic.

Packaging: The standard flip cap packaging – you get it by now.

Performance: Over, this was my least favourite in comparison to the rest in terms of performance. I used a lot of product and my skin still did not feel clean after. I felt like I really needed to rub my skin to get any makeup off. I was never able to remove all of my makeup with this product. It was very refreshing on the skin and hydrating. This product would be great in the morning as a super gentle cleanser, but I would not recommend it for removing makeup.

Overall, I’m pretty impressed with the other micellar waters that are out there! Vichy and Garnier tie for my first favourite followed by Marcelle and then Simple. Check out my other post about what micellar water is and how to use it here.

What’s your favourite micellar products?

Happy cleansing!
