Best Bronzers for Every Budget

L'Oreal Glam Bronze, Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer, Lise Watier Eclat Bronzer, Rimmel Matte Bronzer, Benefit Hoola Bronzer, Nyx Matte BronzerAs a perma-pale girl, I am all about bronzers this time of year. It is the perfect way to add that sun-kissed glow we all crave as the summer months approach. Over the past couple of weeks, I have been digging through my collection determining my favourite tried and true bronzers, and of course scouring the drugstore to find the best of the newly released bronzers. Here is a full breakdown of my favourite bronzers for every budget!

Under $10

Rimmel Natural Bronzer, 021 Sun Light, $7.99 – This bronzer regularly retails around the $8 mark,  but I was lucky enough to pick this guy up on sale for $5.99. This bronzer was part of Elle Canada’s Products of the Year for 2015, and rightfully so. It is waterproof and has an SPF of 15. It is super blendable and applies smoothly. The shade I chose is the lightest matte shade available. It is perfect for adding warmth to the skin without any added shimmer.

Under $15

Nyx Matte Bronzer, Deep, $11.99 – Now that Nyx is so easily accessible in Canada I have jumped on their bandwagon for every category it seems. The one thing I really love about this product is the packaging. It has a large mirror in the lid, which is so convenient. The shade I chose was deep. This is because all the other ones seemed too warm with a red or orange undertone that wasn’t going to be flattering on my skin tone. The powder is very pigmented, so a light hand is necessary, but it looks beautiful on the skin.

Under $20

Physicans Formula Murumuru Butter Bronzer, Bronzer, $19.99 – First of all, this bronzer smells incredible! It smells like summer aka coconut and pineapple. The smell itself had me sold. Infused with Murumuru butter, cupuacu butter and tucuma butter it is full of pro-vitamins and fatty acids that help to condition, moisturize and soften the skin. It is a really creamy formula that blends out smoothly. It has a slight glow to the finish that is super natural on the skin and looks amazing. It also has a small compartment underneath that contains a foam applicator and mirror. This product is also hypoallergenic, paraben free, gluten free, non-comedogenic, dermatologist approved and oil free.

Under $25

L’Oreal Glam Bronze Face and Body Bronzer, Medium, $21.99 – This is a super sized product with high lights of gold throughout. I love the large pan because I can easily swirl my brush around, which allows me to evenly coat my brush for a consistent application. In the pan these products look very light, but on the skin it is a much different story. So don’t be deceived by the colour you see in the package as it will apply darker to the skin. This is a new product from L’Oreal this season that has been receiving a lot of hype online – it is totally worth the hype.

Over $30

Benefit Cosmetics Hoola Bronzer, $36 – This is a beauty community favourite in the bronzer category, and a personal favourite. This bronzer is super buildable and the perfect bronze shade that is not too warm and not too cool. It also comes with a narrow brush, which is the perfect shape for contouring. This product is so versatile and is a must have for me.  One time, I had some pretty harsh tan lines that I was able to cover using Hoola – talk about a life saver!

Lise Watier Escale Summer, Escale Bronzing Powder, $44 – This limited edition bronzer provides quite the deal for the price. It is a huge pan of product holding about twice the size of product in comparison to the others on the list. This is a beautiful marble powder with shades of bronze, pink, and gold throughout. It creates a soft glow on the skin that makes you feel like a goddess. I am so happy I got my hands on the limited edition product and I hope you do too!

Here are full swatches of all the bronzers. L-R: Rimmel, Nyx, Physicians Formula, L’Oreal, Benefit Cosmetics, Lise Watier.

Influenster VoxBox: Maybelline Product Review

FullSizeRender (10)Just over a week ago, I received a VoxBox from Influenster containing a bunch of Maybelline products. There is nothing I love more than putting new products to the test! I am so grateful to have been able to collaborate with Influenster and share my thoughts on these products with you. The products I received included: Maybelline Lash Sensational Lucious Mascara, Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Dark Circle Eraser (shade Illuminate), Maybelline Dream Velvet Soft Matte Foundation (shade 15 Ivory), Maybelline Master Contour Palette (shade 10 Light-Medium) and Maybelline Colour Sensational Soft Matte Lipstick (shade Siren in Scarlet).

Starting out with the mascara, I honestly am not a huge fan. First of all, when I opened the package the wand was damaged – super disappointing. I was able to bend the wand and make it into a usable state *clapping emojis*. I found that the wand picked up way too much product and the formula itself is really wet in consistency. These two combined resulted in my lashes clumping together – it was a mess. In order to make it wearable, I had to use a different wand to remove the excess product and separate my lashes. It was just way too much work! I love the original formula, in the pink tube, and I’ll be sticking to that.Maybelline Lash Sensational Luscious Mascara

The Instant Age Rewind Dark Circle Eraser has been a favourite of mine for a while. I was so happy to see this little guy in my box. I am running low and it is always nice to have a backup on hand. I really love this product because it is extremely light weight. It is perfect for the under eye area because it isn’t too heavy and it won’t sink into fine lines and wrinkles. I also love the illuminating shade because it reflects light, which helps to cancel out any darkness under the eyes. I’ve been using this for what seems like forever and I don’t see myself stopping anytime soon. Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Dark Circle Eraser

When it comes to foundation I am super picky. When I saw the Dream Velvet foundation in my box I felt a little uneasy because I can be super hard to please when it comes to foundation. I was pleasantly surprised with this product. Despite the fact that it was a shade too dark I enjoyed the foundation. It gives more of a dewy finish and feels very hydrating on the skin. I applied it with a damp beauty blender sponge and was able to achieve a buildable medium coverage. I would say this product is better for dry, normal or combination skin. It probably isn’t something I will reach for very often, but if I am looking for something with some coverage for a natural makeup day, or just looking for a bit of coverage while spending time outside this summer, I will reach for this. Maybelline Dream Velvet Soft Matte Foundation

I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THE MASTER CONTOUR PALETTE. I know all caps is really aggressive, but it was the only way I could express my excitement. I think this palette is perfect. All three shades look beautiful on the skin. The bronzer adds the perfect warm summer skin kissed look to the skin. And the blush is a beautiful pop of colour. The highlight is pretty natural, but can be built up to be a bit more intense. If you are someone who wants a Jaclyn Hill Becca Highlight kind of glow, then this isn’t for you. But, if you are looking for an everyday highlight you can build up at night this palette is perfect. All three shades work together perfectly. I am so excited to have something that has everything I need all in one place.

Maybelline Face Studio Master Contour

Maybelline has done a great job formulating a matte lipstick that is comfortable to wear. I am not a huge fan of red lipstick – it is something I typically only pull out for the holidays. Although the shade that I received isn’t ideal for me I really love the formulation and will definitely be testing out some other shades in this line in the near future.

Have you tried any new Maybelline product lately?

Jouviance Soft Peel Mask

Jouviance Glyco Laser Soft Peel MaskRecently, I have been testing out Jouviance’s Glyco Laser as home peel treatments, which sound scary with laser in the name and glycolic acid being a key ingredient.  But, before anyone gets too scared and clicks away I have to tell you, my skin has never been happier. My skin looks more radiant, smooth and even.

Jouviance’s Soft Peel Mask is formulated with 5% glycolic acid. It exfoliates, boosts the skin’s radiance and resurfaces the skin. It helps to reduce fine lines, fight photoaging and wrinkles. It will help reduce pore size, hyper pigmentation and sun damage, while treating blackheads and pimples. It is a product suitable for all ages and skin types (even sensitive).

Having recently over exfoliated my skin with a physical exfoliant (probably the most painful experience ever) I love that this product can exfoliate my skin without having to use a physical exfoliant. The non-drying formula uses BHA and AHA along with two earth clays to provide amazing multi-action exfoliation.

I use this product about once a week and I have noticed amazing results. I apply a thin layer for 10 minutes and then remove with warm water. It does have a slight tingling sensation on the skin that I really enjoy. It makes me feel like the product is really working on my skin. Instantly my skin is smooth, soft and glowing. It is an amazing product if you are looking for that instant gratification.

Nivea After Shave as Makeup Primer?

Nivea for Men After Shave Balm as Makeup PrimerMy willingness to slap just about anything on my face might be getting out of hand. I tried to explain to my mom that I was testing out aftershave as makeup primer and she and when she asked why my response was, “because it was on the internet”. Now that I am taking a minute to think about this, “because it was on the internet” is not always a valid excuse, but I’m always willing to take one for the team here on the blog. You’re welcome!

This internet trend of using Nivea for Men After Shave Balm as a makeup primer all started with Nikkie from NikkieTutorials, but most recently I heard about it from my best friend who is also a makeup artist. She sent me a snapchat of herself when she was using it after a long day and her makeup still looked FLAWLESS. Obviously, I had to give it a try.

I used the product over the course of three days. I applied it to my skin after cleansing, toning and moisturizing. The consistency is much different than what I am used to in a primer. It is very runny and liquid in consistency. I applied a quarter sized amount of product to my finger tips, rubbed my hands together and then applied it all over the face focusing mostly on my t-zone as that is where I get oily.

Nivea for Men After Shave Balm

Once applied, as the product started to dry, it left my skin feeling kind of sticky or tacky. At first, this left me feeling kind of concerned because this was something I had never experienced with a primer. However it worked great! This stuff should be renamed to makeup glue because my makeup lasted all day with it. I had a little bit of patchiness start around my nose by the end of the day, but that is normal for me as I tend to rub or touch my nose a lot throughout the day. The product also controlled oil on my t-zone and kept my skin to a demi-matte finish. Over the course of the three days I had the same results where my makeup lasted and looked great. I tested different applications, with both a sponge and a brush, and I still had the same results.

There is a fragrance to this product. It is a kind of masculine scent, but it is very fresh and not like an overwhelming cologne smell. It does linger on the skin for a little while after application, but then disappears. Personally, I didn’t mind the smell at all and it kind of reminds me of those masculine scented candles from Bath and Body Works. If you are someone with sensitivity to fragrance, I would proceed with caution.

Although the product made my makeup look amazing, my skin isn’t quite as happy. On day three, after application, I started to notice some break outs occurring on my face. When I washed off my makeup that night I had developed five blemishes on my face, which weren’t there in the morning. This is a huge disappointment because I love the way my makeup looks on top of it. I don’t plan on parting with it yet because I really did love how it worked. Instead, I think I’ll keep it in my vanity for those times when I run out of primer, or for every once and a while when I need my foundation to really last.

Have you tried the Nivea for Men After Shave Balm as primer? Are there any other interesting makeup trends out there I should try?

Happy Priming,

Kaitlyn xo

The Beauty Blogger Tag

The Beauty Blogger Tag

Today, I have a different post to share with you all that I am really excited about! I was nominated by Brandie from The Striped Coyote to do the Beauty Blogger Tag. She is a fellow Canadian girl that shares posts about beauty, lifestyle, recipes and travel. Check out her blog, you won’t be disappointed! See my responses to her ten questions below.

The Rules for this Tag:

Tag the blogger that nominated you
Answer the questions you were given
Nominate 10 bloggers whose blog is about beauty/lifestyle/fashion
Name 10 questions for your nominees to answer
Inform the bloggers you chose that you nominated them

Have you ever done yoga and did you like it?

Yes, and I loved it! Two summers ago I was attending a pay-by-dontation studio in the city where I live three-four times a week. I absolutely loved it. It was a nice time to have time to myself to clear my head and it also made me feel great. I always had more energy after class and felt so relaxed.
What products do you splurge on? What products do you save on?

I combined these two questions because I actually did a full blog post on this! Check out my post here.
What is your best tip for maintaining healthy skin?

For me, my skin is most healthy when I really dedicate the time to take care of it. Every morning and night I dedicate time to really cleanse and treat my skin based on what it needs. Over the last few months, the use of face masks has really helped my skin. My current favourites are Origins’ Active Charcoal Mask, Vichy’s Normaderm Mask and Avene’s Soothing Moisture Mask.
What do you use to remove your makeup?

Bioderma Micellar Water *insert heart eyes emoji here*! This stuff has been my go-to for as long as I can remember. I also have been following it with Shiseido’s Cleansing Oil over the last three months to get anything the Micellar water might have missed.
How do you maintain your eyebrows (example, threading/waxing)?

To groom and shape my brows I stick to just tweezing at home. I am honestly too scared to trust a complete stranger to thread or wax my brows. Maybe someday, but for now I’ll stick to my trusty tweezers.
What is your favorite mascara?

Benefit Roller Lash! I have been using it for over a year and nothing else compares. I always get asked if I am wearing false lashes when I wear it and that is the best compliment you can ever get with a mascara.
Where do you buy most of your makeup?

I buy most, if not all, of my makeup at Shoppers Drug Mart. I am actually employed as a Cosmetician in one if their locations, so I always do my best to keep my beauty purchases within my store.
What is your favorite shade of lipstick?

This one is really hard, I can’t just pick one. This changes all the time, but currently my two favourites are Smashbox’s Be Legendary Lipstick in Pretty Social and Stila’s Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Caramello.
What is your favorite perfume?

My favourite fragrance changes all the time. Right now, I am loving Versace’s Bright Crystal or Lancome’s Tresor La Nuit.

Here are my nominations:

Isabelle from Belle’s Beauty Page, Lieve from Love Lieve, Chana from Derpy Pink and Molly from Molly a la Mode

Here are my questions for my nominees:

What is one beauty product you can’t live without?

What is your favourite nude pink nail polish? (I am currently on the hunt for the perfect nude pink polish, so any suggestions would be appreciated!)

What is your favourite brow product?

Where do you purchase most of your beauty products?

What is your favourite hair care product?

How often do you wash your makeup brushes?

What is your favourite blog post that you have written?

Why did you start blogging and what do you love about it?

Where do you get inspiration for your posts?

What is the best beauty related advice you have ever received?

Thanks to Brandie for the nomination. I can’t wait to see my nominees responses!

Happy Tagging,

Nyx Highlight and Contour Pro Palette

Nyx Highlight and Contour Pro Palette

Contouring can be scary and intimidating, to say the least. I mean, we’ve all seen those thirty second instagram videos where that girl slaps all those different colours on her face, blends it with a sponge and comes out looking flawless. Instagram lies. I would classify myself as someone with a pretty decent handle on the whole makeup application thing, but even sometimes I get overwhelmed by this whole higlighting/strobing/baking/contouring thing. (Baking, in particular, didn’t go so well for me… aka I had reverse racoon eyes in photos. Yikes.)

For the last week or so, I have been testing out the Nyx Highlighting and Contour Pro Palette and it makes contouring and highlighting so easy – almost as easy as those instagram girls make it look. Nyx tries to make it easy by providing visuals on the disposable package that indicate where to put each shade. This is super helpful for beginners! The product comes with eight shades – two shimmery highlights, two matte highlights, two cool toned contour shades and two warm toned bronzer shades. Each shade is a 2.7g pan for those of you looking to compare the amount of product in this palette versus others on the market. Each pan is also removable, so as you run out of your favourites, or want to sub in a new colour you easily can.

What do I love about this palette? Well, for starters the yellow shade (Cream) has literally changed my life. This is not an exaggeration. Yellow is really good for cancelling out darkness. I have been using this to set my under eye concealer and I have never looked so well rested in my life. You wouldn’t even know that daylight savings time has just happened and I feel like I need tooth picks to prop my eyes open. I would purchase this palette just for that shade alone. Anyone struggling with concealing dark circles needs this product.

I also love the formulation of the powders. The powders are all very smooth and blend easily, making them very forgiving. The one thing I will say, is that I found the white shimmer highlight (Ice Queen) to be a little powdery. When trying to pick it up with a brush it is very easy to pick up too much product as it tends to go powdery and fall apart. However, that was the only shade that I had that problem with and if you use a light hand when picking up the product it can be avoided.

The price is also amazing! In Canada, this runs for $29.99. The colour selection is very comparable to higher end contour palettes that are over double the price. If you are someone new to contouring, and worried about making the investment in the higher end palettes, this is a great alternative. You get the same colour selection and great quality without having the break the bank.

Overall, I am really happy with this product and it will be part of my daily routine. It has all the shades I need in one place creating convenience as I don’t have to switch between two or three different products. Plus, I love how forgiving the shadows are, so if I make a mistake I can easily just blend it out and no one will know.

Beauty Products: When to Spend or Save?

16454450011_ec8afcfbdc_o

Being a self proclaimed beauty addict can be expensive… very, very expensive! Over the last year or two I have started to be more conscious of what I am spending on beauty products and services. When I can, I try to use cheaper alternatives, like an at home or DIY version to save some cash.

Manicure: SAVE –  With drugstore brands coming out with so many gel polishes that don’t require a UV light to cure the polish I have become obsessed with at home manicures. With an at home gel manicure I can get close to seven days out of an at home manicure, which is pretty good in my books. My favourite at home gel polish is from Revlon. Another tip I heard from a friend if you want to save when getting a manicure at the salon is to ask for just the polish. This will save you some money because it cuts out the whole massage and prep part of the manicure. If I am being totally honest, I don’t even enjoy the massage part of a manicure.

Skincare: SPEND –  Your skin is the largest organ on your body and you don’t get any second chances. With that being said, I am 100% hands down willing to invest in products for my skin. One tip I do have, for when you are paying a higher price tag for skincare products, is to be sure to look into the return policies. I know Shoppers Drug Mart, in particular, is willing to return a lot of higher priced skincare products even after they have been used. This is a great policy because you have a chance to try out the products and see if they work for you. If it isn’t the right match, you can bring it back.

Artificial Tan: SAVE – As a permanently pale skinned girl with no hope of ever getting that golden glow from the sun I am all for team self-tan. I have gone the professional spray tan route and the at home version and my verdict is to save and self-tan at home. There are so many good options for tanning at home that provide the same results as the salon. Plus, one bottle of self-tan to apply at home, which can be used for numerous applications, can run close to the cost of one application from a professional. My favourite at home tanning products come from St. Tropez Tan, which can be purchased at your local Sephora or Shoppers Drug Mart.

Hair Colour: SPEND – Hair colour is one thing I haven’t ever tried to save on and don’t think I ever will. I’ve seen the good, the bad and the ugly outcomes from boxed dyes working in a beauty retail outlet. That experience in itself has been enough to turn me off of trying to save a few dollars. I’m leaving my hair colouring needs up to the experts. If you are looking to save on the cost of hair colour from a professional check out Groupon. I have heard of a lot of people who have been able to purchase Groupons, which has helped them save when getting a cut or colour from the salon.

Hair Care Products: SAVE – I am a huge fan of saving when it comes to hair care products. I can often find really good products at the drugstore, or can find great discounts on salon branded products at discount retailers like Winners. Since discovering a number of great higher end products at Winners, I can no longer justify paying full price for salon products. The amount of money you can save this way is amazing!

What do you like to spend or save on? Let me know in a comment below!
