Monthly Must Haves: May 2016

Essie Fiji Nail Polish, Benefit Porefessional Matte Rescue, Joe Fresh Champagne Highlighter, Nyx Scult and Highlight Brow ContourMay has come to an end and I could not be more excited for June to arrive!  I have a few new products that I’ve been using during the month of May that have become favourites for me and I would love to share with you all.

Nyx Sculpt and Highlight Brow Contour – I have a confession to make… this is the first brow pencil I have ever used. I have been a huge fan of using brow powders to fill in my brows ever since I started filling in my brows, but the pencil has certainly stepped up my brow game (#browsonfleek). The main difference I have noticed in using a pencil is that my brows are a little bit bolder and much more defined, which I love. This pencil comes with a brow colour in one end and a highlight shade in the other end. I really appreciate the consistency of the pencil. The colour is very forgiving and gradually buildable. It has a fine tip which allows for hair like strokes. I also find it isn’t a super dry pencil and it glides on easily. So happy to have discovered this one in the month of May. P.S. I wear the shade Blonde/Ivory, which is best for an ash blonde brow.

Joe Fresh Highlighter Powder – Joe Fresh Cosmetics have recently launched within Shoppers Drug Mart and I have been using their highlighter in the shade champagne. It has been my go-to product for highlighting over the last month. It is a beautiful cool-toned pink shade. It offers the perfect everyday highlight for me. If you are someone who wants an intense highlight that can be seen from outer-space, then I don’t think this is the highlight for you. However, if you are like me and just looking for a subtle everyday glow this product is perfect. It is not overly glittery or chunky and just provides a natural luminous finish to the skin. I definitely recommend testing this guy out!

Joe Fresh Champagne Highlighter

Essie “Fiji” Nail Polish – I have been on the hunt for the perfect nude pink nail polish. It has been such a struggle to find a nude pink that doesn’t look washed out, that is opaque and doesn’t make my skin look too pink. I have been obsessed with Essie’s Fiji this month. It is the perfect opaque creamy pale pink shade. It applies so nicely and is the perfect shade of pink I have been searching for. I also have received so many compliments on it and people keep asking me who does my nails – clearly they aren’t looking close enough at my paint job.

Benefit Cosmetics Porefessional Matte Rescue – To be honest I really didn’t give this product much thought when it first launched. I already use Benefit’s Porefessional Primer and I didn’t think anything could do much better than that, but after trying their new Matte Rescue I’m hooked. It is a gel-water consistency that absorbs instantly and feels so clean and refreshing on the skin. It has mushroom extract to absorb excess oil on the skin and diamond powder to blur out the appearance of pores. I apply this product to freshly cleansed skin after moisturizing. I feel it instantly absorb into the skin and almost tighten my pores. I apply the Porefessional primer on top and I have noticed my t-zone looks significantly less oily throughout the day. I think this product is going to be a life saver as we move into the warmer months of summer!

Those are my favourite products of May. What products did you love this month?

Happy June,

Jouviance Soft Peel Mask

Jouviance Glyco Laser Soft Peel MaskRecently, I have been testing out Jouviance’s Glyco Laser as home peel treatments, which sound scary with laser in the name and glycolic acid being a key ingredient.  But, before anyone gets too scared and clicks away I have to tell you, my skin has never been happier. My skin looks more radiant, smooth and even.

Jouviance’s Soft Peel Mask is formulated with 5% glycolic acid. It exfoliates, boosts the skin’s radiance and resurfaces the skin. It helps to reduce fine lines, fight photoaging and wrinkles. It will help reduce pore size, hyper pigmentation and sun damage, while treating blackheads and pimples. It is a product suitable for all ages and skin types (even sensitive).

Having recently over exfoliated my skin with a physical exfoliant (probably the most painful experience ever) I love that this product can exfoliate my skin without having to use a physical exfoliant. The non-drying formula uses BHA and AHA along with two earth clays to provide amazing multi-action exfoliation.

I use this product about once a week and I have noticed amazing results. I apply a thin layer for 10 minutes and then remove with warm water. It does have a slight tingling sensation on the skin that I really enjoy. It makes me feel like the product is really working on my skin. Instantly my skin is smooth, soft and glowing. It is an amazing product if you are looking for that instant gratification.

Beauty Room Gallery Wall

Processed with VSCO with hb1 preset

After posting a photo of the new gallery wall I created in my beauty room, and receiving a lot of questions and requests for inspiration, I decided to do a post about it. For those of you that don’t know, I am very passionate about making my space my own. Even in temporary rental apartments, or student residences, I have always gone out of my way to decorate my space and really make it feel like my own. For me, it is so important to come home to a space at the end of the day that feels like home and is somewhere I enjoy spending my time.

After spending hours scrolling through Pinterest and pinning tonnes of gallery walls, I decided to create my own. I looked at a number of different ways to create my wall – finding prints in store, look at free alternatives online, and looking online to buy prints to be sent to my home. After narrowing down the alternatives I decided to purchase my prints through Etsy. The Etsy shops I chose allowed me to instantly download electronic files of the prints that I could then print at home or take to a print shop. I chose to take them to a print shop. It cost me around five dollars to print them all and I was able to print higher quality images then what I could do at home, and on better quality paper. The other great thing about Etsy is that a lot of the shop owners are willing to customize for you free of charge. Both the “Blend” and “Lipstick Swatches” prints were originally pink, but I messaged the shop owners and they were happy to make colour adjustments. This allowed me to really have personalized prints that fit my space exactly how I envisioned them to.

For the frames, I really did not want to spend a lot. I am a recent graduate and do not have a huge budget for decorating. I chose to look for frames at thrift stores, Value Village and Dollarama. I was able to get lots of unique frames that fit my colour scheme and budget.

There are a lot of different prints on Etsy, so feel free to explore other shops, but here is where I got the prints pictured above:

  1. Blend
  2. Lipstick Collage
  3. Bobby Pins
  4. New Underestimate the Power of an Eyebrow
  5. Lashes
  6. Lipstick Swatches
  7. When in Doubt Wing it Out
  8. Home is Where the Makeup Stash is

How do you personalize your space? Have you ever made purchases from an Etsy store for home decor?

Happy decorating,

Kaitlyn xo

The Beauty Blogger Tag

The Beauty Blogger Tag

Today, I have a different post to share with you all that I am really excited about! I was nominated by Brandie from The Striped Coyote to do the Beauty Blogger Tag. She is a fellow Canadian girl that shares posts about beauty, lifestyle, recipes and travel. Check out her blog, you won’t be disappointed! See my responses to her ten questions below.

The Rules for this Tag:

Tag the blogger that nominated you
Answer the questions you were given
Nominate 10 bloggers whose blog is about beauty/lifestyle/fashion
Name 10 questions for your nominees to answer
Inform the bloggers you chose that you nominated them

Have you ever done yoga and did you like it?

Yes, and I loved it! Two summers ago I was attending a pay-by-dontation studio in the city where I live three-four times a week. I absolutely loved it. It was a nice time to have time to myself to clear my head and it also made me feel great. I always had more energy after class and felt so relaxed.
What products do you splurge on? What products do you save on?

I combined these two questions because I actually did a full blog post on this! Check out my post here.
What is your best tip for maintaining healthy skin?

For me, my skin is most healthy when I really dedicate the time to take care of it. Every morning and night I dedicate time to really cleanse and treat my skin based on what it needs. Over the last few months, the use of face masks has really helped my skin. My current favourites are Origins’ Active Charcoal Mask, Vichy’s Normaderm Mask and Avene’s Soothing Moisture Mask.
What do you use to remove your makeup?

Bioderma Micellar Water *insert heart eyes emoji here*! This stuff has been my go-to for as long as I can remember. I also have been following it with Shiseido’s Cleansing Oil over the last three months to get anything the Micellar water might have missed.
How do you maintain your eyebrows (example, threading/waxing)?

To groom and shape my brows I stick to just tweezing at home. I am honestly too scared to trust a complete stranger to thread or wax my brows. Maybe someday, but for now I’ll stick to my trusty tweezers.
What is your favorite mascara?

Benefit Roller Lash! I have been using it for over a year and nothing else compares. I always get asked if I am wearing false lashes when I wear it and that is the best compliment you can ever get with a mascara.
Where do you buy most of your makeup?

I buy most, if not all, of my makeup at Shoppers Drug Mart. I am actually employed as a Cosmetician in one if their locations, so I always do my best to keep my beauty purchases within my store.
What is your favorite shade of lipstick?

This one is really hard, I can’t just pick one. This changes all the time, but currently my two favourites are Smashbox’s Be Legendary Lipstick in Pretty Social and Stila’s Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Caramello.
What is your favorite perfume?

My favourite fragrance changes all the time. Right now, I am loving Versace’s Bright Crystal or Lancome’s Tresor La Nuit.

Here are my nominations:

Isabelle from Belle’s Beauty Page, Lieve from Love Lieve, Chana from Derpy Pink and Molly from Molly a la Mode

Here are my questions for my nominees:

What is one beauty product you can’t live without?

What is your favourite nude pink nail polish? (I am currently on the hunt for the perfect nude pink polish, so any suggestions would be appreciated!)

What is your favourite brow product?

Where do you purchase most of your beauty products?

What is your favourite hair care product?

How often do you wash your makeup brushes?

What is your favourite blog post that you have written?

Why did you start blogging and what do you love about it?

Where do you get inspiration for your posts?

What is the best beauty related advice you have ever received?

Thanks to Brandie for the nomination. I can’t wait to see my nominees responses!

Happy Tagging,

Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum Foundation

Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum FoundationThe struggle is real when it comes to finding the perfect foundation. Trying out foundation is my LEAST favourite thing. I feel like starting off my blog posts with makeup mishaps or embarrassing moments is becoming a trend, but it’s okay. I am willing to take one for the team here. My worst experience with a foundation involved it oxidizing on my skin. I would apply it in the morning and within two or three hours it would turn orange. Like, I was literally an umpa lumpa by 11am. I went through two full bottles of the product before I came to the conclusion that my foundation shouldn’t change colour before noon (#RookieMistake). The worst part of all is other people noticed my foundation appearing super orange, but no one told me! For future reference, help a girl out and let her know she is channeling her inner umpa lumpa. She will thank you later.

Towards the end of summer, I wasn’t happy with my foundation routine and decided to take the plunge and try something new. I am so happy I did because I discovered the Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum Foundation (Why do beauty products have to have the world’s longest names?) and I am in love. It is a light to medium coverage foundation – it starts off light and can be built up to a more medium coverage – that has a 16 hour wear time. It is a formula that is supposed to enhance the skin through diminishing the appearance of fatigue and bring radiance to the skin. It is a gel consistency with a vitamin-rich fruit formula including litchi, goji berries and pomegranate. It is available in six shades and is hypo-allergenic.

Why do I love this product so much? Well, to start with, application is a dream. It blends so naturally with the skin to create a flawless natural finish almost like a second skin. I also love that it lasts all day. I always set it with a powder (the Bourjous Healthy Matte 10 hr Powder), which helps it last and also adds more coverage. The coverage on this product isn’t super high, but it is enough for everyday wear. It covers up any redness and evens out the skin tone, but doesn’t hide blemishes very well. I usually use a fuller coverage concealer to cover up any pesky blemishes the foundation doesn’t cover on it’s own. I would normally do that with any foundation, so that doesn’t strike me as a con to this product.

Since using this product I can honestly say my skin seems healthier. I have been using it for about six months now and I feel like my skin is more radiant. I also feel like I struggle with breakouts less frequently. The light to medium coverage definitely allows my skin the chance to breathe and I am noticing how much clearer my skin looks as a result.

Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum Foundation $29, Shoppers Drug Mart

Do you have a favourite foundation or any other Bourjois products you’ve tried? Let me know, I am always up for some new recommendations!

May your foundation never oxidize,

Beauty Sleep = Dream Cream

Overnight Face MasksI don’t care what Beyonce says, I did not wake up like this. Unfortunately, I don’t know her secret, but I do know a secret about how to wake up with happier skin. It comes in the form of overnight facial masks or what I like to call dream cream.

What is an overnight face mask? Overnight face masks, like your everyday masks, are applied to the skin after cleansing, but rather than wearing it during an episode of your latest Netflix binge you wear it while you sleep and wash it off in the morning. Also, I should point out it is best to let it dry for 15-20 minutes before you hit the pillow, otherwise it is going to be enjoyed entirely by your pillow. I found that out the hard way with white bedding.

What makes dream cream so great? While you sleep your skin goes into restoration, the fastest way I can explain this is by saying that your skin works to repair any damage and rejuvenate skin cells. For a much more detailed scientific definition google it – it is actually so cool all the things your skin does while you’re sleeping. Applying an overnight mask creates a protective layer over then skin and further enhances the restoration process by adding hydration, antioxidants and all that other good stuff into the skin. As a result you wake up looking refreshed and your skin will thank you for it.

Another great thing about overnight masks is that they offer a variety of different treatment options – hydrating, brightening, anti-aging… Here are a few to try (captured in the photo above):

Olay Regenerist Luminous Overnight Mask, $29, Drugstore

Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask, $30, Sephora

Clinique Moisture Surge Overnight Mask, $41, Shoppers Drug Mart

Fresh Black Tea Firming Overnight Mask, $108, Sephora

Enjoy your beauty sleep!

Micellar Water: A lazy girl’s cleansing dream

Micellar WaterListen up lazy girls, I’m about to answer your skincare prayers. You thought cleansing your face in the shower was a dream? Well I’ve got two words for you that are even easier (once you figure out how to pronounce the first one): micellar water.

Micellar water was a huge North American trend in 2015 with what seemed like every brand bringing one to the market. Micellar water is made up of tiny micelles. These micelles attract dirt, oil and impurities and remove them from the skin without the harsh stripping action that happens with foaming cleansers. The product is great for any skin type, and leaves behind a hydrated glowy finish.

Now you’re probably wondering, “How is this a lazy girl’s dream?”. It’s a non-rinsing formula! That means you apply the micellar water to a cotton pad, swipe it on your face, then you’re good to go. In one product you can easily cleanse and hydrate. Plus the micelles are great at breaking down makeup.

Micellar water was a great addition to my skincare routine this past year. Here are a few to try out (captured in the photo above):

Simple Cleansing Micellar Water, $9.99, Drugstore

Bioderma Sensibio H2O, $19.97, Shoppers Drug Mart

Caudalie Micellar Water, $28, Sephora

Avene Micellar Lotion, $28, Shoppers Drug Mart

Lancome Eau Fraiche Doucher Micellar Water, $39, Sephora

Happy cleansing to all my fellow lazy girls out there!

Oils that can cleanse?

Cleansing oil, two words that when I first heard had me asking a lot of questions. As it turns out, it is just another skincare/beauty trend that us North Americans are behind on yet again. European women have been using these products for years – this statement basically had me sold, I mean, have you seen their skin? (#flawless)

The whole concept behind cleansing oils is that they use good oils to attract bad oils. This makes sense when I think about cooking with oil. Before you mix anything together with oil, it always separates from the other ingredients. The same kind of thing happens when you use a cleansing oil. The good oils within the cleansing oil, attract bad oils in your skin, like sebum, and remove them from your skin without harshly stripping your skin like some cleansers. Without harshly stripping the skin of all the natural oils this helps to keep the skin hydrated and balance the ph level, which can reduce breakouts and overproduction of oil.

Now the next thing I thought, after hearing about cleansing my face with oil was, “I have oily skin, there is no way I’m adding to this slick mess…”. But in reality, adding oil to oil isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Some cleansing oils contain botanical oils which can be antibacterial. These will help reduce the number of break outs caused by bacterial overgrowth. Also, sometimes oily skin can be caused by lack of oils in the skin. Using a cleansing oil can replenish your skin and prevent it from over producing oil. And in case I haven’t hit it home yet – oil attracts oil – using a cleansing oil can remove excess oil from the skin.
